Server RAM Rank Explained: 1Rx4 vs 2Rx4 vs 2Rx8
RAM rank describes how the memory chips on a DIMM are organised into groups that the memory controller can access. Labels such as 1Rx4, 2Rx4 and 2Rx8 indicate both the number of memory ranks and the data width of the individual DRAM chips. Rank is an important specification when selecting or upgrading server memory, but it should never be considered on its own.

What Does RAM Rank Mean?
A memory rank is a group of DRAM chips that the memory controller accesses together as one logical data block.

What Does 2Rx8 Mean?
2Rx8 means that the memory module contains two ranks and uses x8 DRAM devices.

x8 = eight-bit DRAM device width
Although both 2Rx4 and 2Rx8 are dual-rank modules, their internal DRAM organisation is different.
For this reason, you should not assume that two modules are identical simply because both are marked as 2R.
Is 1Rx4 Better Than 2Rx4?
Not necessarily.
A higher or lower rank does not automatically mean that one memory module is better or faster.
The correct memory configuration depends on:

Can You Mix Different RAM Ranks?
Sometimes, but it depends on the server platform and its memory population rules.
Some enterprise systems can operate with DIMMs of different ranks, while other configurations have restrictions on how those modules must be populated across memory channels.
For example, the system may support both single-rank and dual-rank memory but require particular DIMM positions or limit the maximum memory speed when several ranks are installed on the same channel.
For this reason, rank should always be checked alongside the manufacturer's memory configuration requirements.
Does RAM Rank Affect Memory Speed?
It can.
Modern server CPUs have a maximum number of memory channels, DIMMs per channel and memory ranks that they can support at particular frequencies.
As more DIMMs or ranks are populated on a memory channel, some platforms may reduce the memory operating frequency.
The actual result depends on:
• CPU generation
• Server architecture
• Number of DIMMs per channel
• Number and type of memory ranks
• Memory module speed
• BIOS or firmware configuration
This is why installing DDR4-3200 memory does not necessarily mean that the server will operate it at 3200 MT/s.
Does x4 or x8 Mean the Number of Memory Chips?
No.
The x4 or x8 designation describes the data width of each DRAM device, not simply the number of physical chips visible on the module.
Therefore:
x4 means each DRAM device has a four-bit data width.
x8 means each DRAM device has an eight-bit data width.
The number of physical memory packages on the DIMM can vary depending on capacity, generation, ECC implementation and module design.
Is Rank the Same as the Number of Sides of a RAM Module?
No.
Single-sided and double-sided are physical descriptions of where memory chips are located on the PCB.
Rank is a logical electrical organisation.
A DIMM with chips on both sides is not automatically dual rank, and the physical layout of the chips should not be used to determine memory rank.
Always use the specifications or manufacturer part number.
How Can I Find the Rank of My Server RAM?
The rank is often printed directly on the memory label.
You may see specifications such as:
16GB 2Rx8 PC4-3200AA or 32GB 2Rx4 PC4-2933Y
In these examples:
2Rx8 = Dual Rank x8
2Rx4 = Dual Rank x4
If rank is not clearly displayed, use the exact manufacturer part number printed on the module and check its technical specifications.
Don't Check Rank Alone
One of the most common mistakes when buying server RAM is finding another module with the same rank and assuming it is compatible.
For example:
32GB DDR4-2933 2Rx4 RDIMM and 32GB DDR4-2933 2Rx4 LRDIMM
may share capacity, speed and rank but are still different memory technologies.
When checking server RAM compatibility, consider:
• DDR generation
• Capacity
• Speed
• Rank
• x4 or x8 organisation
• RDIMM, LRDIMM or UDIMM
• ECC type

• Server memory population rules
Does the RAM Brand Need to Be the Same?
