For example, a compatible Samsung DDR4 RDIMM and Micron DDR4 RDIMM with matching characteristics may operate together without issue.
A Samsung RDIMM and Micron LRDIMM, however, should not be mixed simply because both are DDR4 and have the same capacity.
Can Samsung and SK Hynix RAM Be Mixed?
Often yes, provided the modules and server configuration are compatible.
Samsung and SK Hynix are both major DRAM manufacturers widely used in OEM enterprise servers.
The important factor is not whether the logos match. The specifications and platform requirements need to be compatible.
Can Micron and SK Hynix RAM Be Mixed?
Yes, this can also be possible.
As with every mixed-memory configuration, check the technical specifications rather than relying on manufacturer alone.
What Specifications Should Match?
When adding RAM to an enterprise server, check these characteristics.
DDR Generation
DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory generations.
They are not interchangeable.
If a server uses DDR4 memory, you must install compatible DDR4 modules.
Memory Type
This is one of the most important checks.
Common enterprise memory types include:
• RDIMM
• LRDIMM
• ECC UDIMM
RDIMM and LRDIMM should not be mixed.
Likewise, RDIMM should not be treated as interchangeable with UDIMM simply because both modules are ECC memory.
Capacity
Using the same capacity across a memory channel or server configuration is often preferable and may be required by certain population rules.
For example:
32GB + 32GB
is generally a simpler configuration than:
16GB + 32GB
Some servers allow mixed capacities, but the DIMMs may have to be installed in a specific order.
Memory Rank
Check whether the modules are:
• 1Rx4
• 1Rx8
• 2Rx4
• 2Rx8
• 4Rx4
• another supported configuration
Different ranks can sometimes operate together, but the server's memory population rules should be checked.
Memory Speed
Different memory speeds may sometimes operate together, but the system generally uses a speed supported by the CPU and memory configuration.
Installing faster RAM does not force slower RAM to operate faster.
DRAM Organisation
Two modules with identical capacity and frequency may still differ internally.
Specifications such as x4 and x8 describe the organisation of the DRAM devices.
For enterprise upgrades, matching the organisation of the existing memory where practical can simplify compatibility.
Does the Part Number Have to Be Identical?
Not always.
For many server upgrades, an identical part number is the simplest and safest option, but technically compatible modules can sometimes operate together even when their manufacturer part numbers are different.
For example, equivalent server memory modules may be produced by:
• Samsung
• Micron
• SK Hynix
Each manufacturer will have its own part number despite the modules sharing similar technical specifications.
However, OEM server requirements should also be considered.
What About Dell, HPE and Lenovo Branded RAM?
Enterprise servers may use memory supplied under an OEM part number from Dell, HPE or Lenovo.
The physical memory itself may have been manufactured by Samsung, Micron or SK Hynix.
OEM systems can also use firmware, qualification rules or manufacturer-specific part numbers.
For this reason, when purchasing replacement server RAM it is useful to check both:
• The original DRAM manufacturer's part number
• The OEM part number, when present
This is particularly important when maintaining manufacturer-supported configurations.
Can Two Modules From the Same Brand Still Be Incompatible?
Yes.
This is an important point.
Two Micron modules are not automatically compatible simply because both are Micron.
For example:
Micron 32GB DDR4 RDIMM and Micron 32GB DDR4 LRDIMM - are different memory technologies.
Similarly, two Samsung modules may have different:
• DDR generations
• capacities
• speeds
• ranks
• memory types
Brand matching alone is therefore not a compatibility check.
Is It Better to Use Identical RAM Modules?
When possible, using identical modules is the simplest option.
It provides:
• More consistent memory population
• Easier compatibility verification
• Easier troubleshooting
• More predictable speeds and ranks
• Simpler future upgrades
However, an enterprise server does not necessarily require every memory module to have the same manufacturer's logo.
Will Mixed RAM Brands Reduce Performance?

Example of a Potentially Compatible Mixed-Brand Configuration
Consider two modules with these characteristics:

Micron:
32GB DDR4-2933 ECC RDIMM 2Rx4
If the exact modules are supported by the server and CPU, these specifications provide a much stronger basis for compatibility than the fact that the manufacturers are different.
